Fact Check:
Picture messages doing rounds on social media purport to show a Rare and Unique Pagoda Flower in Himalayas, which Blooms only once in 400 Years. They show a cone-shaped flower in cream color with green leaves at the bottom. The flower you see in the picture certainly appears different and unique. However, it is not Pagoda flower and it is not even a rare one growing once in 400 years.
Not Rare Pagoda Flower from Himalayas
Firstly, the story reminds us of a similar, popular story from past about Mahameru Pushpam, which as a matter of fact, is not true.
Similarly, what you see in the picture is Rheum nobile (Sikkim rhubarb or noble rhubarb), a giant herbaceous plant native to the Himalayas. The plant growing 1–2 m tall appears from northeastern Afghanistan, east through northern Pakistan and India, Nepal, Sikkim (in India), Bhutan, and Tibet to Myanmar. It occurs in the Alpine zone at 4000–4800 m altitude. Unlike what is suggested, Rheum nobile plant is seen quite often and does not grow once every 400 years. It is often called a Glasshouse plant because of its outer curtain of translucent bracts. They allow visible light to pass through, creating a greenhouse effect, while blocking ultraviolet radiation.
