About the Story of Dead Man’s Chair

The story in question is about an allegedly haunted Oak chair cursed by murderer Thomas Busby, killing around 200 people who sat in it over decades. It says the people who sat on the chair go through haunting experiences like extreme itching, paranoia, hearing things, confusion, items moving on their own and written warnings on mirrors and walls. After many such strange occurrences, the people allegedly end up in an imminent death.

Popular stories say about arrest, trial and hanging to death of Thomas Busby after he murdered his father-in-law Daniel Auty (or Autie) in 1702. Auty and Busby were allegedly running a coin counterfeiting business (among other criminal enterprises) and they argued about the business which ended with Busby killing Auty. While one version of the story says Busby cursed the chair whilst on his way to his execution, another says he was drunk in the chair when he was arrested and cursed it then. Likewise, the story about dead man’s chair sometimes appears among the most haunted items in the world. It in fact continues to captivate supernatural fans.

Cursed and Haunted Deaths After Sitting in the Chair?

Stories in circulation mention hanging of Thomas Busby in chains at Sandhutton crossroads, a small village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. They say Busby’s ghost haunted the site of his execution and an Inn beside it changed its name to the Busby Stoop Inn. People say the chair remained at the Busby Stoop Inn (a pub) for many years. There are many stories of death linking the haunted, dead man’s chair of Thomas Busby.

Alleged Deaths Because of Dead Man’s Chair

In 1894, a chimney sweep sat in the chair during a night at the pub. She’s said to have been found the following morning hanging from a pole beside Busby’s gibbet post or ‘stoop’. Locals also said during the WW2, Canadian airmen from the nearby base at Skipton-on-Swale visited the pub. Those who sat in the chair never returned from bombing missions over mainland Europe. In 1967, two Royal Air Force pilots sat in it, and while driving back from the pub, crashed into a tree and died. A few years later, two builders sat in it out of challenge, and within hours, the one who sat in it fell to his death from a roof. A cleaner who stumbled into it while mopping, later died of a brain tumor. Likewise, people also linked some fatal accidents in the 1970s with sitting in the chair.

In 1978, after a Vicar declared the chair ‘Evil’, landlord Mr. Earnshaw donated it to Thirsk Museum in England. He put up condition the haunted chair should hang from the ceiling so no one can sit in it again.
